Arrived, Settled, and Ready to Resume

I’m drinking morning coffee at the kitchen table in Urbana, IL!  And I’m so excited to be here!  It has been an adjustment going from this:

From Knoxnews

to this:

but, I am arrived, settled, and ready to resume.

Points of excitement here, relating specifically to LIS:

The Urbana Free Library and Archives  As a side note, a current exhibit at the library is a “Literary Tour of the South,” which thrilled me.

UC2B Project Big Broadband and affordable internet project.

This lecture by Virginia Eubanks, author of Digital Dead End. I have to say Digital Dead End has stick with me.  I’m evershifting on her claims of the offline effects of ICTs and potential of ICT to serve marginalized communities, sometimes they make perfect sense and sometimes they seem deeply flawed. Regardless, its thought-provoking, and I’m excited to hear her talk.  The lecture is “Can Technology Serve Social Justice?”

The Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center  The community here has a vastly different relationship to art and writing then Knoxville.  I’m fascinated by it.  A subdivision of the Independent Media Center is Radical Librarians and Archivists; I will be finding out more about this.

And more to come….

I thought I heard the ghost of the English Professor who once lived here yesterday 😉  He was apparently a wonderful host and I do indeed feel very welcomed here.  I wish I knew more about architecture history.  I’m studying the house trying to decide what is original, what is old but not original, and what is new.

Hey there! One of my friends, Maggie, is a radical librarian at IMC! She also runs a flower CSA over the summers. Here is her flower blog: The IMC seems like a really neat resource, but one that I admittedly don’t know much about.

Small world!!! I’m going to try to make it to their next meeting, I’d like to find out more about what they do. And her blog is beautiful! I’m not really sure what IMC does either, but it does seem like a really great resource.
